NHCIC's statement to those in attendance at Deerfield's School Deliberative Session on February 6th
Larry Graykin spoke: "I am chairperson for the non-profit organization, the New Hampshire Center for Integrated Curriculum. As some people may be aware, NHCIC had established a timeline that would have had the warrant article for Middle Village School appear on this year’s ballot.
"Since I spoke here a year ago, NHCIC has made great progress. Both the school board and the state have approved the charter, but we have asked the school board to hold off on the warrant article for one year. This extra time will give us an opportunity to develop the school and its infrastructure. This year we will be seeking more input from the community, recruiting a board of trustees for the school, and developing the first year's curriculum. Expect to see the warrant article on next year’s ballot. If approved at that time, then Middle Village School would open in time for the 2010-2011 school year."

THE DEERFIELD SCHOOL BOARD APPROVED THE MIDDLE VILLAGE CHARTERED PUBLIC SCHOOL CHARTER!
Diane St. Jean and Larry Graykin of NHCIC join Deerfield school board members Kevin Webber, Bonnie Beaubien, and Kevin Barry in watching school board chair John Harrington sign the Middle Village contract.
At a special meeting on Wednesday, 9/10/08, members of the Deerfield School Board voted unanimously to approve the proposed contract and application for Middle Village Chartered Public School. This means that the contract and application will now be reviewed by the NH Department of Education. If state approval is secured, Deerfield voters will have the final say in early 2009. Middle Village School could be open for the 2009-2010 school year!

About Middle Village Chartered Public School
Middle Village will start as a 6th and 7th grade school, and grow in the following year to include 8th grade as well. Classes will be multiage-that is, grades levels will be mixed together-and assignments will be tailored for each student.
Lessons that are usually taught in separate classrooms (math, science, reading, etc) will often be taught in an “integrated” fashion—for example, geometry could be taught while building models of ancient Rome, and writing skills could be practiced as students write scripts for a historical reenactment. Integrated curriculum is more like “real life” learning.
People perform better if they know that their work matters. Middle Village students will create real projects for real people—for example, an informative website for the town, a movie for the town's Historical Society, or a regular program for community cable. By working on projects like these, the students will gain real experience in using new technologies. Students will develop skills needed to succeed in a rapidly changing world.
