OUR LATE JUNE VISIT TO THE
DEERFIELD FARMER'S MARKET
WAS FANTASTIC!

Representatives of NHCIC were at the Deerfield Farmer's Market on Friday, June 27th.  Special thanks to all the folks who have worked to make the Deerfield Farmer's Market such a vibrant and enjoyable place for townsfolk to meet and to buy locally-made crafts or some fresh, local produce.  We deeply appreciate the support and assistance they provided to us.  We hope to return soon!

About the project

The New Hampshire Center for Integrated Curriculum, a non-profit organization, has proposed the opening of a new public middle school of choice in Deerfield, NH.  NHCIC first approached the Deerfield school board about the possibility in August 2007.  In March 2008, Deerfield voters approved the necessary RSA to allow for charter school proposals to be considered. As of the date of this writing, June 2008, the Middle Village School charter (a plan describing what the proposed school would be like) is complete and has been officially submitted to the school board and the SAU office for consideration.  If the school board approves the charter, it then must be approved by the NH Department of Education.  Town residents would have final say on the project, in the voting booths, in March of 2009.  If approved by all concerned, Middle Village School is expected to open for the 2009-10 school year.

About Middle Village School

Middle Village School will start as a 6th and 7th grade school, and grow in the following year to include 8th grade as well. Classes will be multiage-that is, grades levels will be mixed together-and assignments will be tailored for each student.

Lessons that are usually taught in separate classrooms (math, science, reading, etc) will often be taught in an “integrated” fashion—for example, geometry could be taught while building models of ancient Rome, and writing skills could be practiced as students write scripts for a historical reenactment. Integrated curriculum is more like “real life” learning.

People perform better if they know that their work matters. Middle Village students will create real projects for real people
for example, an informative website for the town, a movie for the town's Historical Society, or a regular program for community cable. By working on projects like these, the students will gain real experience in using new technologies. Students will develop skills needed to succeed in a rapidly changing world.

Would Middle Village be a good choice for your child?

If your child needs to know why something is worth doing in order to commit to doing it…

If your child enjoys working with technology—computers, cameras, recording equipment, etc…

If your child is creative and wants to learn how to use that creativity productively…

If you are currently homeschooling your child, but would consider a small alternative public school…

If your child is a budding musician who is interested in learning more about recording…

If your child is an promising artist who wants to learn more about combining their art with the latest technology…

If your child is “hands-on” learner…

Or, if your child has more energy than others, and
feels “pent up” in a traditional classroom…

…then
Middle Village School may be the right choice!

Middle Village will not be the best school for everyone. Our unusual schedule may limit participation in other activities. For example, if your child is a dedicated athlete, Middle Village may not be a good choice, as the extended school day may interfere with your child's ability to attend practices, meets, etc. Middle Village will give parents a choice in the education of their children.
